Visit, Stay & Save Peak District & Derbyshire

Buxton Pavilion Gardens

On a lazy summer afternoon the sound of music washes over the picnickers and sunbathers as a local band entertains from the bandstand. There is plenty of well-tended grass to sit on, but the more discerning may like to hire a deckchair to listen and while away a pleasant hour or two.

But it's not just for summer.

waterfall.jpgPavilion Gardens is open all year round and there is always something to see throughout the changing seasons. Even when there is snow on the ground (which there always is at some point during a Buxton winter) the happy voices of playing children carry on the breeze across the lakes and lawns to reach the ears of strolling couples.

Red noses and glove-muffled fingers are no barrier to enjoyment when there is fun to be had.

Pavilion Gardens is a 23 acre haven, a grade II listed park that dates back to the 1870s.

Originally Pavilion Gardens was 12 acres of land given to the town by the 7th Duke of Devonshire (who also helped to fund the building of Solomon's Temple), and designed by Edward Milner.

Today it still reflects the original plan, design and style thanks to the sensitive recent restoration and refurbishment that was finished in 2004.

promenade.jpgSaunter along the winding paths beneath the canopies of mature trees, pause beside the water's edge to watch the ducks, or let the kids play in the traditional play areas. Why not take a ride on the miniature train or play a game of crazy golf?

Home to a host of events throughout the year, and particularly during the summer, Pavilion Gardens is the grandly dignified Victorian parkscape that fronts the Octagon, the Conservatory and the Opera House. Let's not forget the bandstand, the swimming pool, a food and gift shop, the Promenade Café and Gardens Coffee Lounge and also the Fountain Restaurant.

Visitors to the Food and Gift Shop will find a great array of food and craft products from over 30 local suppliers. Ranging from chocolate and chutneys to pottery and pictures and everything in between, it's a real taste of the Peak District.

You can either banquet or just enjoy a snack, get married here or host your wedding reception; the classical Octagon structure of glass and steel provides the perfect backdrop for those romantic wedding photos. Whatever the occasion, formal or informal, Pavilion Gardens has the means to cater for your needs, and it is these great facilities that have made it the hub of Buxton all year round.

The Opera House adds another dimension to Pavilion Gardens, particularly during the summer months of July and August when the Buxton Festival and the International Gilbert & Sullivan Festival take place.

At these times it's not unusual for ladies and gentlemen in evening dress to be spotted taking a moonlit walk beneath the trees in the soft, summer evening air. Childish laughter gives way to hushed conversation, and the rough and tumble makes way for a more refined sophistication.

Pavilion Gardens manages to be both contemporary and historic. It is a garden for all seasons and all ages with something to delight around every bend of every path.
