Buxton Shops

Buxton - A Town in Two Halves

Will it be the shops in Higher Buxton by the Market Place at the top of the Slopes, or the Lower Buxton shops with the Spring Gardens and Cavendish shopping arcades? Best advice? Do both, because you really don’t want to miss anything.

The two halves of Buxton town are separated by quite a steep hill, Terrace Road, which is skirted on one side by the Slopes - a very pleasant grassy hill, criss-crossed by paths and benches. It’s a popular resting area in summer when the mature trees are in full leaf and squirrels and birds are entertaining companions.

Higher Buxton

This is where the shops around the market place is situated, and was traditionally the heart of the town. Tuesday and Saturday are market days. There is a lovely range of shops here, including a great craft shop, a very tempting deli, and the wonderful Buxton Museum & Art Gallery with its award winning ‘Wonders of the Peak’ gallery along with their own gift shop offering many unique items. Shown in the picture is the Town Hall.

Lower Buxton

The majority of shops are here, including the two shopping arcades, Cavendish and Spring Gardens. Cavendish Arcade, with its unusual and specialist range of shops, also houses the refurbished remains of the sunken thermal/hot bath where people ’took the waters’.

The main shopping area, Spring Gardens, is pedestrianised, but beware the odd delivery vehicle that drives through. You’ll find all the major high street shops as well as a wealth of specialist local shops and great cafes.
