About Fairfield Methodist Church
There has been a Methodist Chapel in Fairfield since 1844 but it was the uniting of two societies, the Fairfield Road Society and the Queens Road Society, in 1962 that saw the formation of the Fairfield Methodist Church.
During the 1980s, and following a decrease in congregation numbers, the original church building was a financial burden. Constant, ongoing repairs were needed and heating alone cost more than was raised at collection. A boiler breakdown resulted in costly pipe-bursts, and despite a new heating system being installed the decision was taken to seek a new building. After consultation between the District, the Church and the Johnson Housing Trust an agreement was reached whereby the Housing Trust could build a block of sheltered housing for the elderly on the site of the church, providing they included in the building plans a construction that would be suitable for a modern church.
In 1783 John Wesley had preached in Buxton at St. Peter's Church Fairfield and it was during the rebuilding of the Methodist Church that these early links between Fairfield Methodist Church and St. Peter's Church were cemented. The new building took around 18 months to complete, and whilst building was going on the Methodists held morning services in St. Peter's. The two churches still share Evening Prayer services twice a month.
Sunday morning services are held in Fairfield Methodist Church every Sunday at 10.30am
