family Learn More about Historic Building

OWNERS of a former Haddon Estate hunting lodge are embarking on a journey of discovery to learn more about the history of their building and its grounds.

East Lodge at Rowsley was transformed into a hotel in 1984 and now its current owners, the Hardman family, are calling for Dales residents to help them piece together its past.

Director Iain Hardman said: "There is a wealth of history here, all around us and even below our feet.

"We know so little about the history of East Lodge, but what we do know makes us thirsty for more information.

"We want the local community to help us by reporting any anecdotes they have about East Lodge's history, and drawing to our attention any documents and photographs that may be of interest as part of a history project."

Staff at East Lodge have been trawling through local historical archives to see what they can unearth.

They believe the ghost of former resident Maud Levett, a 19th Century spiritual writer, haunts one on the rooms. It is said that echings she made in 1898 can be seen in the window of the room.

Mr Hardman said: "She is a friendly ghost and has never caused any real problems.

"Many guests have seen her over the years and some people even book into that room specifically to see if they will have a ghostly encounter."

If the East Lodge history project is successful, the Hardmans hope to publish a leaflet to allow guests to learn more about the building.

To add to the project, email idh@eastlodge.com or call Mr Hardman on 01629 734474.

A prize draw will be held later this year, with a mid-week overnight stay for two on offer to one of the project
