Oxfam in Buxton
Oxfam in BuxtonThe
Oxfam charity shop in
Buxton is part of an international charity which started in 1941 during the Second World War when famine set in following the Nazi occupation of Greece and the Allies naval blockade. They campaigned then for the government to ease the blockade and allow vital medical and food supplies to reach the civilians.
Oxfam now campaigns and works around the world to help raise awareness of and combat the issues surrounding poverty and suffering.
They respond to emergencies, providing vital aid and resources in disaster areas; they work with people and governments to develop solutions that enable people to work their way out of poverty and they campaign for policy changes that will make lasting changes in people's lives and communities. The charity shop in
Buxton helps to support the work of Oxfam across the globe from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe.
Fairtrade in Buxton
Fair Trade offers an alternative market place to small, independent or disadvantaged producers to ensure they are paid a fair price for their goods and are able to trade internationally.
Oxfam has been involved in Fair Trade for the past 40 years and was the first organisation to introduce the idea of a fairer trading system for small-scale producers.
It started in the 1960s as a means of teaching communities how to grow their own food rather than relying on food aid, and now has the widest range of Fair Trade food and drink anywhere on the High Street, or in the case of
Buxton, Spring Gardens.
The Fair Trade range has 72 different food and drink items, as well as greetings cards and giftware, many of which are on sale in the Oxfam shop in
Buxton.
